Good Biblical Leadership

"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.  For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you."
John 13:13-14

The way the world thinks of a leader is way different than a biblical leader.  The world would say a leader is powerful, demanding, strong, in charge, telling people what to do, and making things happen.  This is how we are taught in our culture to be a strong leader.  Often people end up resenting many of their bosses and managers because this is how we lead.  And we end up wanting to be in a leadership position, so our jobs can be 'easier' and we can lead by telling others what to do.  But, in this scripture Jesus gives us an example of what a leader is supposed to look like.  In fact he even says, "I have given you an example", meaning this is precisely what Jesus' followers are expected to do.  Godly biblical leadership starts with being a servant, and being willing to put others first.  In this passage of scripture, Jesus, their "Lord and Teacher", wraps a towel around His waist, pours water into a basin, and begins to wash their feet.  He doesn't ask for permission, or ask them what their needs are, or how he can help them.  He just humbles Himself, bends down, and begins to serve them.  When we lead by serving first we are aligning ourselves to the practice of biblical leadership.  This can better be understood as an idea of being a servant leader.  This is how we are called to live and to lead!  When we serve other's needs first, we naturally become leaders because people instinctively want to follow someone that they can see is willing to serve.  Jesus told His disciples to wash one another's feet, but I would challenge you to make this a way of life in all our relationships.  I wonder how much better the world would be if everybody was willing to put others first in servant leadership?  Today, evaluate your relationships and how you lead.  Are you willing to wash others feet?  Meaning are you willing to serve someone else's need before yours despite of how tough the job may be?  Pray and ask the Lord to show you ways to serve others' needs before your own today.  Ask God to put people in your path today that you can love on and serve.  This is the true way to be a godly servant leader!  You want people to lead, and want people to follow you?  Then, serve people first!  Love you all!  Praying for you and yours!  Have a blessed day, it's your choice!
