"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." - John 17:3
Many in our society, and culture at large, are engaged in a phenomenon called the Dunning- Kruger Effect. This is described as a cognitive bias wherein the systematic tendency of people is to give overly positive assessments in their abilities, when in reality, there is low ability in a certain area. In other words, the Dunning- Kruger Effect is happening in situations where we know just a little information about something or someone, but act and assume as if we are experts. In a world where information is at our fingertips, we see and experience a lot of this Effect.
The most dangerous way we see this is in our relationship with God. There are 3 main ways to "know" something: 1) Awareness- this is when we know that something is in existence. We, or people we know and love, might be aware of God; that He exists, but not much more than that. 2) Information- this describes what we know about something or someone. Perhaps the most harmful disposition as a Christian is to know about God, but not know God. There is a difference! We all have experienced someone that is full of Bible and theology, but does not know God personally. 3) Relational- this is when we know more than just information, we are more than just aware, we are personally and intimately involved.
Relational knowing is the type of knowing that the Apostle John records Jesus praying about in John chapter 17. In this chapter we read Jesus's prayer for His disciples and all believers; that they would know God, have life in Him, and find unity in Him. He says: "this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent." The Greek word rendered "know" in this verse, is not describing awareness or information, but is explicitly relating to personal, intimate awareness.
The most important action we can ever take in this life is to know God. Do you know Jesus in a personal and intimate way?
Love you so much! Praying for you and yours! Have a blessed day, it's your choice!
