Where my Help comes from

"I lift up my eyes to the hills.  From where does my help come?  My help comes from the Lord, who made the heaven and earth." - Psalm 121:1-2

One of the hardest things for us to do is to ask for help.  Why is that!?  Perhaps for some of us, we don't recognize that we need help.  We think that we are fine with managing our own lives and all the struggles that come along with it.  We live in a society that tells us that "we got this" and sadly most of us will never truly realize that we are far from "getting" anything.

The grace of our suffering is realizing that we are in great need of help.  Often, the best gift we can ever receive in life, is realizing that we cannot do this life all alone.  The first step in realizing that we can have victory in our life comes from realizing that doing life alone only cultivates defeat.  Think of some of the greatest challenges you have faced in life.  How many times have you told yourself you are capable of making a change in that situation, just to become challenged, frustrated, and ultimately finding yourself face-to-face with defeat yet again?

Sometimes, we can realize we need help and yet still look for help in all the wrong places.  We may look for help with the wrong group of friends or the wrong crowd.  We may look for a kind of help that will only serve to put a band-aid on a temporary problem, and yet never truly get to the heart of the problem that actually needs to be solved.  And even sometimes, we fall into the idea of "self-help".  Sadly, this has become what some churches and Christians today consider the good news; a self-help type of religion that gets me on the path to success.  Yet, all of these "solutions" fail over time.

As the psalmists writes, "My help comes from the Lord".  I like to picture the psalmist going about life's problems and attempting to solve them in all the various ways we all try, only to find that none of these solutions truly ever solve anything.  And there in the midst of a problem, all the psalmist could do was look up to the hills and mountains and realize that the Creator of them all, is the only true Source of all the help we will ever need!  At times we have sought help through the wrong people or failed to see that sufficient help cannot come from with in us,  and hopefully those experiences have drawn us closer to the true source of our help in Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the only one that promises "in this world you will have trouble... but take heart!  I have overcome the world!" (John 16:33).

Today, make the intentional decision to draw your help from the Lord.  In our troubles we seek help in all the wrong place so often, but today make the wise choice to choose the True source of help, Jesus, laying all your burdens on Him!  "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matt. 11:30).  For in Him, we will truly find the source of help and rest for our souls we desperately crave!  Love you all!  Praying for you and yours!  Have a blessed day, it's your choice!

  5. Thanks for the reminder Tony. When we ultimately face death the only source for help at that point is the Lord. We look to the hills, where does our help come from, our help comes from the Lord.
